With all the chatter of global warming (or change), it is easy to miss parts of picture regarding typical/atypical weather & subsequent climate patterns that evolve with time and are re-visited by nature. They are just one more interesting fact(s) that is too quickly overlooked and is too; part of the "normal" climate (and change) and not man-made in the least.

As you very well know when you were in Southeast Michigan back in those days of cold, brutal winters; the topic and catch-all phase was "Global Cooling" or more to the point; fears of a possible new ice age in the climate very long term wings!
-BillWeatherHistorian_SeMIhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12247129301782738256noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8061638381804602738.post-77939645038028029562012-10-08T20:32:40.293-04:002012-10-08T20:32:40.293-04:00Living in Michigan myself for a number of years an...Living in Michigan myself for a number of years and having been an Air Force meteorolgist for some years the study of climate fascinates me. Living in South Florida these patterns are very important in the winter for agricultural interests for frost and freezes. The years noted in your summary are years South Florida had significant freezing temps in winter months. 1977 and 2010 being the worst years. Janaury 1977 snow flurries were reported for the first time in history at Miami International (MIA) and as far south as the upper Florida Keys!! Winter of 1972-73 snow was reported widespread in the deep south all the way to north Florida. These blocking patterns are important for South Florida winters. The placement the 500 mb low is key to what winter weather we will experience. It's going to be an interesting winter. Maybe I need to stock up on old blankets and sheets for my tender ultra tropicals, many of which I had to replace from the January 2010 cold snap when the 500 mb low acted like a cold conveyor belt right into South Fl giving the Florida Keys it's coldest winter in 132 years (NWS Key West)Concrete Firemanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00696396925044067752noreply@blogger.com
